MIX IT UP! Add a splash of color to your outfit

Have you seen our latest video staring Spankie Valentine all about color combos?
If you haven't take a look:

The easiest way to make sure you're not clashing? Take a spin on the color wheel! No seriously!

Colors across from each other on the color wheel are called complementary and are very visually appealing when paired together! Or pick three colors that sit next to each other to the color wheel- like yellow, green and blue. You can always dare to think out of the color wheel but this is a great tool for when you are thinking of what you could wear with a new outfit!

So in case you need more outfit inspo- here's a little bit more:

Looking to add a bit of color but don't want to splurge on a new outfit? Make your accessories and shoes the pops of color over a neutral top and jeans. We loved these cranberry heels- they are perfect for fall and can easily be worn casually or dressed up. Turquoise and other natural stone jewelry is on trend and compliments those heels perfectly!

Love denim jackets but stumped on how style them other than over denim? Try layering it over a dress or jump suit. Really want to know how to make them pop? Pair them with denim's bff, tangerine! Tangerine and blue perfectly compliment each other by bringing out the best in both shades

Mixed prints have been all the rage for the past few seasons but it can be kind of challenging to find to prints that compliment and don't clash. The easiest way to pull of this trend? Keep it simple. This black and white outfit makes it a no brainer. Also stick to the classics- polka dots and stripes are simple prints that pair together perfectly . Other easy combos herringbone/stripes, stripes/hounds tooth, plaid/polka dots.

So what do you think? Are there any other color combos you like? Will you be mixing patterns? Let us know in the comments!

Last Minute DIY Valentine's Candy Bouquets for Him and Her!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!  Whether you're actually celebrating today with a date, friends, family, or just yourself, it's a great day for a smile and to tell someone you love them!

Now, let's get to why you're really here!  If you're anything like me, you may have left some (or all!) of your Valentine's Day gift planning up to the last minute!  Maybe you don't know what to give your boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/baby-mamma/boo thang and are currently fretting and ready to make a mad dash to the grocery store to get some predictable roses?!

Fear not!  I've got a couple unique, and best of all, yummy DIY gift bouquets that you can create in a matter of minutes!  There's one for him, and one for her!  And with a quick hop down to the 99Cent Store or your local market, these will only cost you about $5 - $8 each!  Yassss!

LET'S DO THIS!  (Additional Instructional Video at the end)

For Him:

I found this adorbs mustache tumbler at the 99Cent Store (they also have ones with lips if doing this for her).  Or just grab a clear vase or mason jar.

Next comes the fun part:  fill it with his/her favorite candy!

Don't forget the candy hearts!  Got all my candies from the dollar store :)

You can top it off with some glitter hearts (also from the dollar store).  Or maybe a little love note rolled up from you?

And voila!  How easy was that?  If you want to give it a pro look, wrap it up in some cellophane for protection and something for them to unwrap!  Again, one roll of cellophane, 99 cents at you know where!

============================================

And for her (or any flower loving dude in your life)!

I wanted to create a unique flower bouquet using something other than flowers!  I was walking up and down the 99Cent Store isles when I came across these jumbo gift bows in all sorts of colors, and thought, why not?!

For starters, I just needed to create the stem.  So I found a pack of wood kebob skewers and some green streamer ribbon (pack of 2 for 99cents) and went to work.  Put some glue on the end of the green streamer and press it firmly on the end of the stick.

Then simply wrap the ribbon all the way down the stick, putting a little dab of glue in the center to secure.

Next comes the cool part.  The giant bows already have a sticky backing just waiting to be used!  Simply peel off the backing, press the stick on the adhesive, and press closed the other half of the sticky.

If you want to add some leaves to the bouquet, and just ties some of that curling ribbon around the base of the stick underneath the adhesive, and curl with scissors.

Next, I took a mason jar and filled it with her/his favorite candy.

Lastly, fill the jar with the flowers that you created, using as many as you want to, and boom! You have one super cute, creative, and yummy flower bouquet.

So which yummy bouquet are you most excited about creating?  And remember, if you're celebrating Valentine's Day by yourself, there ain't nothing wrong with making one of these for yourself!

Celebrity Halloween Costumes 2012!

Have you recovered from Halloween yet and the classic post-sugar slump?  Or did you stay in and avoid the trick-or-treaters all night, watching a romantic comedy?

Whether you celebrated Halloween in costume or not, the celebrities sure went all out this year!  We saw some of the classicly predictable costumes like sexy pirate this, and sexy nurse that... but what we love most are the celebrities who got a little more creative, and weren't afraid to look a little silly in the process!

Here are some of our favorites!  And to start us off, I just had to slip a pic in of my handmade costume!  I went as a candy cane!  Miss Candy Cane to be exact! ;)

Spankie Valentine as Miss Candy Cane.

Ellen's costume is hands down my favorite!  She went as Sophia Vergara in her famous Emmys dress.  Not only was this clever, but so hillarious!  Just look at the high heeled feet resting on top of Ellen's tennis shoes!

Kim Kardashian went with something predictably skin tight, dressing as catwoman while KanyeWest went as Batman.  Did we mention there was a gold Batmobile involved?  Miley Cyrus donned a huge yellow wig, leopard body suit and pink lips to become Nicki Minaj.  Are those ass cheek implants included?

Nicole Richie matched her daughter with ballerina costumes while trick-or-treating, and Debbie Harry worked her legs in a cancan dancer outfit, while Bette Middler dressed as Coco Chanel, complete with signature pearls.

Supermodel Gisel Bundchin went all out in headpiece and blue eyeshadow to transform into an Egyptian Pharaoh, and Dita Von Teese looked especially  dapper as an androgynous French person.

Jennifer Lopez and beau Casper Smart coordinated their looks as sort of Native American hippies, while Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka and their twins dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz.

So which was your favorite costume?

How to Wear It: High Waisted Shorts

I've been bombarded.  Yes, bombarded by questions from our wonderful fashionista family on tips for wearing shorts.  And to be more specific, high waisted shorts.  It's a style that transcends seasonal trends year after year, and has become more of a lifestyle statement for some fashion hungry divas.

So last week I posted a fashion video (watch it above!) featuring about 9 different looks with high waisted shorts (and a few not so high waisted).  I wrote and recorded the song, shot, and edited the video in a span of 3 sleepless days!  And now that it's out, I wanted to take a moment and breakdown some of the looks from the video!  So here are 3 of my favorite ways to rock high waisted shorts!

Look 1:  Leopard Shorts with Bustier Top

This look is extremely versatile and one of my favorite ways to wear high waisted shorts.  By incorporating leopard patterns into your look, you automatically add a fun and edgy look to the outfit.  But, because the printed shorts are fitted in a classic, tailored silhouette, they not only flatter most all body types, but add an element of class and sophistication which plays nicely off the playful print.

I paired the shorts with a crop top bustier.  Not everyone likes to wear a midriff top, and that's the beauty of high waisted shorts (or skirts, or pants for that matter).  You can wear a crop without the appearance of it being a crop which makes it a more all around look, appropriate for many different occasions.

To complete the look, I added a couple long necklaces which I think balance out the long waist shorts, and a pair of bold red loafer pumps.  Leopard + red = love at first sight.  If you want further coverage for your high waisted look, try adding a sheer cardigan!  It gives you more coverage in the back without hiding the style.  And of course, if you're looking to add a hipster dimension to the look, top everything off with a tan or black fedora and natural beachy hair!

Look 2:  Leopard body suit with red shorts.

Remember what I said above?  Leopard + red = love at first sight?  Same applies here, I just switched the color placement.  This is definitely a more bold and playful take on the high waisted shorts with this attention getting hue.  I wanted to go with a body suit for one of the looks, as they are a match made in short heaven when it comes to being paired with something high waisted.  They will never ride up, look bunchy, or untuck themselves from your shorts, which can be a huge frustration when sporting this look.

That's why I opt for crop tops or body suits.

I was in love with the sheer cutout detail of the body suit, and wanted to further accent it by wearing another long necklace.  The buttons of the red shorts keep with the sleek tailored look, almost creating a nautical feel.

To add a more hipster vibe (which is optional of course) I wore some long thigh-high black socks along with these killer spiked and studded peep toe pumps!  You could also rock this look with some military boots or studded flats.

Well that's the wrap on these 2 looks!  I'll post some more breakdowns of the other looks later on in the blog!  And here are the links to all the items I've shown if you want to grab them:

Red High Waisted Shorts
Leopard High Waisted Shorts

Black Bustier Top
Leopard Bodysuit
Black Sheer Cardigan

Red Loafer Pumps
Black Spike Studded Peep Toe Pumps
Brown Fedora
Cross Necklace
Skull Necklace

Until then, which is your favorite look?
