Naomi Campbell Sues Cadbury

Considering her track record, it’s surprising that the advertising and marketing executives over at Cadbury even risked putting Naomi Campbell’s name on their ad. The supermodel is suing over a new ad for the candy company’s “Bliss” chocolate bar which in big bold letters includes, “Move over Naomi, there’s a new diva in town.” According to Independent UK, Campbell says, “I am shocked. It’s upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humour in this. It is insulting and hurtful.”

Naomi’s mother had a thing or two to say as well about this issue. “I’m deeply upset by this racist advert. Do these people think they can insult black people and we just take it? This is the 21st century, not the 1950s. Shame on Cadbury.” A spokesperson for Cadbury released a statement insisting that the ad was meant as a “light-hearted take on the social pretensions of Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss,” and also mentioned that Kraft Foods, the company that owns Cadbury has removed the ad and it is no longer in circulation. Take a look at the ad for yourself and tell us what you think.

Rachel Zoe, celebrity stylist and fashion designer will be debuting her newest collection which will range from $250 to $700 and will be carried at all 41 Neiman Marcus stores and online as well as at Bergdorf Goodman, Shopbop, Nordstrom, Saks, Intermix, Kirna Zabete, and Selfridges.

Although it’s unusual for department stores to go all in with a new brand that is still untested, it seems that Ken Downing, Neiman’s Senior Vice President and Fashion Director has been encouraging her to embrace specific colors and prints and advising her on construction decisions. Don’t worry ladies, if Neiman Marcus isn’t your go to spot when shopping, Shopbop, Nordstrom, Saks, Intermix, Kirma Zabete and Selfridges have all picked up the fall line. The stores will be in stores this July, coinciding with the debut of Zoe’s new season of the Rachel Zoe Project. So will you be shopping her new collection? If not, be sure to catch her newest season on prime time.

Neutrals and Neon

One of the best things about summer fashion is the fact that we’re given the freedom to be bold, fearless and unique as ever. If you’re still lounging around in the dark hues and textures of the winter season, now is the time to finally slip into the more loose fit, sheer fabrics and bright colors.

I’ve mentioned before in a prior post that you’ll be seeing neon and neutral tones this season but who would’ve thought these two can go hand in hand? Now you can take it up a knotch and mix these two trends as seen in Burberry Prorsum’s Spring 2011 collection. Both neons and neutrals look great against a summer tan so it gives you all the more reason to try this trend this summer. You can always incorporate this trend on a smaller scale if you’re scared of looking like a highlighter—try a neon colored nail polish or handbag and instantly brighten up your outfit. The trendiest neon hues seem to be neon yellow, green and orange. In terms of neutral shades, go for tan, taupe, beige and brown to contrast with neon. Why wait? Give your look a boost today!

Kim Kardashian Engaged!

For those who haven’t heard yet, Kim Kardashian just got engaged to 26 year old New Jersey Nets’ Kris Humphries that she has been dating for six months. Humphries was a McDonald’s All-American in 2003 and Utah’s first-round draft choice in 2004.

According to People Magazine, it was a rose-petal engagement, literally. Humphries bended knee and spelled out “Will you marry me?” in rose petals at Kardashian’s home on May 18. “I didn’t expect this at all—I was in such shock. I never thought it would happen at home, and I never thought now.” Of course, what’s more noteworthy is Kardashian’s 20.5-carat diamond engagement ring from jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz. Yep, you read that right. Just to give you an idea, the golfball-sized ring on Kim’s finger is worth an approximate $2 million. Take a peep at this rock on Kim’s finger on the cover of People Magazine. Congrats to Kim and Kris! There are no wedding plans as of yet but I’m sure we’ll be hearing about it real soon!

The Queen Collection

The beautiful Queen Latifah is at it again and has decided to include “designer” to her lengthy title. Queen Latifah who has always been an avid fashionista herself will launch The Queen collection- a line of clothing and accessories including leggings, jeans, handbags and clip-on extensions on HSN this August. HSN has launched lifestyle brands for some of our favorite celebrities including Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Iman and more. Next up on their Hollywood roster is Queen Latifah who will be launching her collection, Queen.

Her collection will come in a wide range of sizes although the term “plus-size” will not be used because Queen Latifah feels that, “It is a word we need to bury at this point ... I wanted to make something size two and up,” she said. “The truth is, we all would like to wear the same clothes. We all want to wear beautiful, fly clothes no matter what size you are, and so for me it was important to match with a company that understood and respected that ideal.” In fact, it’s one of the reasons she hadn’t tried designing clothes before. “I felt like larger girls were not respected, even though we are huge consumers,” Queen Latifah said. “I felt the marketplace didn’t respect us in the way it should. I was not going to step out with a clothing line that didn’t respect a fuller-figured woman or a curvaceous woman, and really all women.”

According to WWD, all apparel will be priced under $100 and leather goods will cost between $170 and $300. Check out some pieces from her collection below and tell us what you think!

Eau de Bieber

The young pop sensation, Justin Bieber has moved on to bigger and better things and has recently announced his launch of his own women’s fragrance called “Someday”, which comes in a 1 oz. rose-shaped bottle with detachable charms in the shape of keys and hearts. Aww, how cute. Keeping his target audience in mind, the scent will be “fruity” and will come out in June in various sizes (for $35-55) as well as a body lotion and hair mist. I mean, since the guy is swarmed by teenage girls 24 hours of the day, it only makes sense for him to have a say in what they smell like right?

Bieber states, “Let’s be real, the way a girl smells is very important to a guy! I have such a deep connection with my fans, so creating a fragrance that I personally love is another way I can bring them closer to my world.”

The fragrance is being supported with a massive marketing and ad push with Dree Hemingway appearing in the print ad shot by Terry Richardson. There is also a TV commercial directed by Robert Lee that was filmed in a Boeing 737 NASA training jet.And get this, Beliebers- Justin is donating every dime of the proceeds from the sale of the $35 scent to charity. It’s scheduled for broadcast from Black Friday after Thanksgiving through Christmas according to WWD. Get ready everyone, the whole world’s going to start smelling like Justin Bieber.

Beyonce's 'Run The World' Video

After getting mixed reviews about the song, Beyonce’s latest single, “Run The World (Girls)” debuted their music video last night during American Idol. Clearly, a diva and superstar like Beyonce has quite a role to fill after chart-topping hits and dance routine. Her “Single Ladies” routine led to numerous Youtube parodies that made it onto the Ellen Degeneres Show—because Beyonce is that amazing.

As for this music video which has been talked about for a while now, its finally been unveiled and one thing I noticed was the fresh-off-the-runway fashion pieces that had me watching the clip more than a few times. She starts the video with a medieval-inspired red dress from Alexander McQueen’s Fall 2010 collection which was the last piece designed by Alexander himself). Later in the clip, Beyonce keeps it classy with a black gown by Jean Paul Gaultier and a contrasting white dress by Givenchy, an avant garde-ish black and gold Gareth Pugh mini dress and tops it off with two Pucci gowns with high slits. Check out the video below and tell us which one of the outfits was your favorite. You’ll be pausing and replaying it more than once because for the fashion saavy, this music video includes just the right dose of haute couture beauties and will have you singing along as well. Who run the world? Girls!

Summer Sandals

Summer’s well on its way and we can finally start embracing the beautiful sunny weather that is headed our way. This means cute swimsuits, comfortable sundresses and of course, a staple in summer fashion, sandals. From what we’ve seen, there is an abundance of shapes, sizes and colors to choose from in terms of sandals this season from wedges to flat sandals. Keep in mind these few basic rules and start your sandal shopping today so you’ll be ready for those long summer days.

1. ) 70's-inspired fashion continues to have a dynamic influence this season on not only apparel but accessories as well as shoes.

2.) Embellished sandals are here to stay and raising the bar for the look of the casual sandal. Move over flip flops, there’s a sassier substitute this season.

3.) Minimalism is another trend this season that fashion designers have fallen in love with and its become apparent on the runways. The key in minimalism is to use key pieces and shapes to make your outfit. The overall look should be simple, classic and effortless.

Also, keep in mind there are different heights of platform, color and straps to consider so play around and experiment with your options and walk in style this coming season whether your by the poolside or checking out a late night summer block party.

Elizabeth Olsen at Cannes Film Festival 2011

To be honest, I didn’t even know that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen had a 22-year old sister and I’ve always been a fan of the twins too from their Full House days to their more recent expeditions of creating a fashion empire to call their own. Her name is Elizabeth Olsen and regardless of the fact that yes, she has a set of very famous and stylish twins as her older sisters, she shouldn’t be overlooked. The 22-year old actress received quite a bit of attention from the media this past weekend at the Cannes Film Festival for her movie premiere of “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and guess what she was wearing on the red carpet? None other than designs by her sisters’ fashion collection, The Row of course—aww, sisterly love!
She looked gorgeous in a white beaded dress for a daytime appearance then followed it up with a sexy black ensemble with a thigh high slit-also from the Row. Elizabeth has received strong reviews for her role and is gearing up to star in Naomi Foner’s “Very Good Girls” with “New Moon” actress Dakota Fanning, Peter Sarsgaard, Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek. It seems that talent and a good sense of style runs in the family; check out the photos below of her premiere night.

Skechers Shape-Ups for Girls Offensive

We’ve all seen the commercials and advertisements of Skechers Shape-Up Sneakers associated with firm bodies and toned thighs and of course, the gorgeous and sexy Kim Kardashian. Now, Skechers is advertising these shoes to little girls in a way that makes me question what any 12-year old girl who sees these commercials are supposed to think. In the commercial, there are stick-thin cartoon girls who are being chased around by boys dressed up as hot dogs, cupcakes and ice cream while girls sing

“Heidi’s got new Shape-ups, got everything a girl wants. She’s got the height, got the bounce, yes, she’s looking good and having fun.”

Body image and the “ideal female image” has been contorted in the media and has always been an issue that has led to women’s struggles with body image so it is no wonder why parents have been complaining and speaking out in outrage over these commercials. Parents believe that young children being exposed to these commercials that directly link being thin with being happy is a major issue and the fact that they market the product as being aimed at toning your glutes is not necessarily a concern that should even cross the mind of a 12-year old girl.

In response to these complaints, the President of Skechers Fitness Group Leonard Armato said, "The concerns about Shape-ups for Girls are unfounded and way off base. The whole message behind Shape-ups is to get moving, get exercise, and get fit." Another Skechers spokesperson said the shoes are not made in preschooler size – they start at size 2, the average size of a 7-year-old. C'mon Skechers, who really needs to do the shaping up?

Tara Lynn- H&M Plus Size Beauty

Who said plus-size girls can’t rock the pages of a major fashion label collection just the same as any other size 2 model? Plus-size model, Tara Lynn is now the face of H&M’s campaign “BiB” (Big is Beautiful) collection and strikes a pose for the Summer 2011 swimwear collection called “Summer Chic, a feminine look with inspiring prints,” made up of sexy swimsuits in leopard print, floral maxi dresses, tank dresses and denim bermuda shorts. The clothes are available on their website available only in the UK site- not the US site but you can still check it out anyway.

Lynn states, “I was a size 14/16 in high school, and it wasn’t the easiest thing. As a 16, I definitely felt like my weight was holding me back. I was supposed to have these bones protruding from my body and clearly that’s not the case, and not the way my body’s meant to be.” She has battled with her weight most of her life but after embracing her size instead of being ashamed of it, many doors have opened up for her in terms of a career in modeling. Lynn has also modeled for Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom and Forever 21’s Faith21 line and even stripped down for French Elle. Check out some of her swimwear screenshots here. What do you guys think of her look?

Off-Beat Oxfords

This season definitely has some vibrant new trends we weren’t expecting. Perhaps the one that takes it for being the most unexpected and what’s the word I’m looking for—eclectic will have to be the off-beat oxfords. When these adorable shoes became the new “it shoe” as a spring accessory, many of us didn’t know exactly how to pair these with our wardrobe. But through trial and error, we adapted. Now, we’re put up to a greater challenge as oxfords are now arriving with a more modern look. In unconventional patterns and prints such as leopard print and highlighter yellow color hue, oxfords are no longer only limited to menswear-inspired patterns and hues and have been seen on the feet of the well-dressed.

With a greater choice of looks, colors, and patterns to choose from, oxfords will surely be a must-have this season and continue well into the fall season as well. Get yourself a pair now, whatever pair you choose to add to your ensemble, we can guarantee your look will be anything but dull.

Holey Crochet and Macrame Trend

What used to be associated with a hobby of the elderly and craft fairs is slowly transforming into one of the hottest fashion trends of the season and stepping up their game. Perhaps it’s coming as a variation of the sheer trend we’ve seen recently, but crochet and macramé designs have been popping up everywhere as it allows coverage but also shows a little skin at the same time for those warmer months yet to come. Fashion houses like Chanel and Issey Miyake have incorporated this decorative knit into their spring/summer collections with crochet tops, dresses and skirts.

Not sure how to add these beautifully crafted pieces to your daily ensemble? Fortunately, this is a rather subtle trend and blends perfectly with almost everything else in your closet. Try throwing a crochet piece over black leggings and some open toe black shoes and you have an ideal spring outfit. For a more feminine casual look, slip into a knitted crochet dress with ankle boots and oversized shades. Without switching up your style entirely, you can incorporate crochet and macramé pieces to your wardrobe for almost any occasion. A word of advice-stick with crochet in a tailored, sleek silhouette and stick to more natural tones of whites, creams, nudes, browns and black as crochet patterns have a sense of traditional sophistication and elegance and therefore, a crochet piece in lime green will probably not be the best way to top off your outfit.

Pray for Japan

I’m sure we all remember hearing about the devastating news that occurred about a month ago over in Japan and it seemed surreal to most of us. What is the world coming to? A 9.0 magnitude earthquake that wiped out mothers, fathers, children and elders in less than a matter of days? It’s important to keep in mind how precious life can be and to of course do what we can to help those in need.

The good news is, hope seems to be increasing for Japan as more help continues to arrive but the situation with the nuclear radiation is still unsettled and a bit disturbing to know that innocent people of this nation are suffering through so much. The destruction upon the nation that took only hours will take not months, but years to rebuild and they need as much of our help as they can get. With that said, check out some of these wonderful ways you can take part to help out those who are in need of help and also adorable to have in your collection. Make sure to keep an eye out for local fundraising events and ways to donate because every little bit helps.

Cat Eye Glasses

The beaming rays of the sun are back and that means protecting our eyes is a must so why not do it with style? One of the hottest new looks this season when it comes to sunglasses are the cat eye glasses. This ‘50s eyewear phenomenon has made its comeback on the spring 2011 runways with a taste of a modern twist from extreme retro frames to subtle cat eye shapes from designers including Giles Deacon, Jeremy Scott, Paul Smith, Tommy Hilfiger and Twenty9Twelve.

Now let’s help you narrow down your choices. For those who have gone shopping for sunglasses, you already know what will work and what won’t work on your face shape. How do these rules apply for cat eye glasses? Generally, a cat eye frame with rounded-out edges will work wonders for a square or diamond-shaped face. A round face will work well with sharper edges or large frames that curve upwards. But before you start writing down these rules, the best option is to try them on and see what works best for your face shape and personal preference. For those looking to make a strong statement, you can try a pair of cat-eye or harlequin glasses with diamond-shaped lenses that point sharply out. If you want to tone it down a bit, you can also find a more subtle pair with a slight flare at the edges.

Once you get your pair of cat eye glasses, its time to think about how to match it with your wardrobe. These fabulous glasses will work well with all varieties of outfits from the more modern to more vintage looks.
